Title of talk: Context Awareness in Automated Communication
Processes
Abstract:
The
automation of repetitive and/or codified human communication processes in large
organizations such as global enterprises and government agencies is a
relatively new research area. It turns out that the automation of static human communication processes is
largely a complex engineering feat, whereas the automation of dynamic human communication processes poses
significant fundamental challenges and requires more research. Static
communication processes are characterized by an a priori defined rigid sequence
of communication steps. Dynamic communication processes, on the other hand,
depend on situational parameters for selecting people, communication media, the
timing for communication, and communication content. In this talk, I will focus
on the notion of context awareness and
its importance for the automation of dynamic human communication processes. Context
awareness is still poorly understood but I will use examples to convey a
feeling for what it might be, why it is important, and how it can endow
automated communication processes with some measure of intelligence.
Summer
Internship Program:
Every year
in the summer, Avaya Labs Research offers a limited number of summer internships to qualified students in
computer science and related disciplines.
Summer interns typically work for 10-12 weeks in one of Avaya's locations in New
Jersey, U.S.A. Our summer interns participate in the design and
implementation of ongoing research projects. I will give a brief introduction into
our summer internship program and will be available for questions and
answers to students who may be interested in applying for a summer internship at
Avaya Labs Research in 2007.
